Best Time to Visit Whistler

Whistler sits in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, with a mountain climate where conditions differ sharply between valley and alpine. Winter (December to March) is the busiest and most expensive season with deep snow across the resort; summer brings long daylight and warm hiking weather, while spring and autumn see quieter villages and shifting trail access. Here is when to go — and when to think twice.

Best: December – March

Peak ski season on Whistler Blackcomb, the largest ski area in North America, with reliable snowpack and the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola linking both mountains — but also the busiest and priciest months, especially over Christmas.

Second choice: July – August, or late May

July and August bring the warmest weather for hiking Garibaldi Lake and riding the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, while late May offers the same trails with far fewer crowds and lower prices.

Think twice: October – November

The 'mud months' locals warn about: the bike park has closed, snow hasn't arrived yet, days are short, and rain is near-constant in the valley.

Month Weather Crowds Price Notes
January -8 to -1°C High High The coldest month, but ski season is in full swing on Whistler Blackcomb; book lifts and lodging well ahead
February -7 to 0°C Very high Very high School breaks push this into the priciest, busiest ski weeks of the year, with reliably deep snow
March -5 to 2°C High High Still full ski season with softer spring snow and longer daylight, prices only slightly below February
April -1 to 6°C Medium Medium Ski season winds down in the village while Blackcomb's glacier stays open, valley trails start to clear
May 4 to 14°C Low Low One of the best shoulder months: the Valley Trail is clear, lodging is at its cheapest, alpine lakes still frozen
June 8 to 19°C Medium Medium The bike park opens and days grow very long, though Joffre Lakes can still hold snow at altitude
July 11 to 25°C High High The warmest month and the start of peak summer, book Joffre Lakes day-use passes and lodging well ahead
August 11 to 24°C High High Still warm and busy, with alpine lakes at their bluest and occasional wildfire smoke drifting through
September 8 to 18°C Medium Medium Crowds and prices ease while trails stay dry, with the first dusting of snow possible up high
October 3 to 11°C Low Low The start of the 'mud months': the bike park closes, rain increases sharply, and ski season is still weeks away
November -2 to 4°C Low Low The quietest month of the year, short days and heavy valley rain, with ski season only opening near the end
December -6 to 0°C Very high Very high Christmas and New Year bring the year's busiest, most expensive week, with deep snow across the resort
